bourdou-vintage-quinquina-aperitif-poster-by-leonetto-cappiello-1926
Bourdou Vintage Quinquina Aperitif Poster by Leonetto Cappiello, 1926

Leonetto Cappiello’s 1926 poster Bourdou grand quinquina apéritif contre les fièvres makes its sales pitch through an encounter that is at once emphatic and absurd: a bright green elephant gazes upwards towards an enormous dark bottle, while a slender green snake curls around its neck. Set against an unbroken field of deep red, the figures possess the instant legibility of a stage silhouette. The elephant’s looping trunk, raised head and amiable expression give the composition its movement; the bottle supplies a commanding vertical accent.

Italian-born and active in Paris, Cappiello helped reshape European poster design in the early twentieth century. Rather than relying on elaborate scenes or densely descriptive illustration, he frequently isolated a single memorable figure against a strong ground, creating images that could be understood quickly in the street. Here, that approach turns a beverage advertisement into an unforgettable visual emblem. Bourdou was promoted as a quinquina aperitif, a category associated with cinchona bark and quinine, hence the medicinal wording “contre les fièvres” — “against fevers”. The poster belongs to a period in which the languages of refreshment, vitality and remedy could overlap with striking directness.

A closer look

The elephant occupies the central-left portion of the design, its saturated green body pushed sharply forward by the red background. Although Cappiello keeps the form broad and simplified, small tonal highlights across the animal’s forehead, ear and trunk lend it a polished, almost theatrical presence. Its upward glance establishes a strong diagonal towards the bottle in the upper right, preventing the otherwise flat arrangement from feeling static. The curved trunk repeats the supple line of the snake, setting two sinuous green forms against the bottle’s rigid silhouette.

The bottle is dark, weighty and dramatically enlarged, with bright reflections suggesting the sheen of glass. Its label repeats elements of the surrounding green-and-red palette, integrating the product into the poster rather than treating it as a separate commercial detail. Around the neck, the small snake introduces an extra note of visual wit: it is easy to overlook beside the elephant, yet its narrow curve helps connect the upper and lower parts of the composition.

Typography anchors the spectacle. “BOURDOU” appears across the lower section in immense, uncompromising sans-serif capitals, while the more descriptive line, “GRAND QUINQUINA APÉRITIF CONTRE LES FIÈVRES”, is set beneath in smaller white lettering. This hierarchy is carefully judged: brand name first, product claim second. A narrow black margin contains the saturated colour, while the limited palette gives every element — animal, bottle and lettering — maximum graphic force.

Context and significance

Cappiello’s poster practice depended upon recognition rather than narrative. His invented creatures, animated products and improbable characters functioned as visual mnemonics, linking a brand with a form and colour combination that could be retained after only a fleeting glance. The green elephant in Bourdou exemplifies that method: it does not explain the drink so much as give it a distinctive public personality.

The medicinal claim also preserves a revealing aspect of interwar advertising culture. Quinquina drinks drew upon the long association between cinchona and the treatment of fever, while presenting themselves as sociable aperitifs. Cappiello compresses those overlapping identities into an unusually concise design. Its appeal lies in this economy: three colours, two unlikely creatures, one monumental bottle and a brand name engineered to remain in the memory.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
