balsam-vintage-quinquina-aperitif-poster-by-jean-dylen-1923
Balsam Vintage Quinquina Aperitif Poster by Jean d'Ylen, 1923

Jean d’Ylen’s Balsam, Apéritif au Quinquina, published in 1923, turns a drinks advertisement into a rush of colour and movement. A jubilant skier sweeps across the dark field with a bottle in one hand and a raised glass in the other, the figure’s brilliant yellow clothing, red equipment and patterned details standing out against deep blue-black curves. Rather than presenting the aperitif as a static still life, d’Ylen gives it a theatrical human presence: energetic, sociable and immediately recognisable from a distance.

The poster belongs to an era in which commercial imagery had become a conspicuous part of modern urban life. D’Ylen, a French designer active between the world wars, was known for vivid promotional compositions that combined elegance with directness. Here, flat colour, simplified contours and emphatic lettering reflect the polished graphic sensibility associated with interwar advertising and Art Deco design. Quinquina was an aperitif flavoured with quinine-bearing cinchona bark, its distinctive bitterness placing it within a fashionable culture of pre-dinner drinks. Although the poster dates from 1923, its title line carries the earlier date 1886, connecting the advertised product with an established history.

A closer look

The skier is arranged on a strong diagonal, as though caught at the crest of a leap. The compact, bent pose concentrates the action around the bottle and glass, while red accents in the ski equipment carry the eye across the composition. D’Ylen pays particular attention to the costume: geometric passages of green, red and white enliven the dominant yellow and prevent the broad area of colour from feeling uniform. The figure’s delighted expression supplies the advertisement with its emotional pitch, making enjoyment itself part of the product’s identity.

Behind the skier, broad dark curves coil through the background. These shapes suggest speed and turbulence without defining a literal landscape; their function is graphic rather than descriptive. The resulting contrast makes the skier appear to spring forward from the surrounding darkness. Small highlights on the glass give it a reflective gleam, while the bottle remains clearly legible as the commercial focus. Its label reads “Balsam”, ensuring that the central action never becomes detached from the name being promoted.

Typography anchors the commotion at the bottom of the design. “BALSAM” appears in a commanding serif face, with “APÉRITIF AU QUINQUINA” stating the nature of the drink beneath or alongside the principal brand message. The lettering is clean and weighty, providing a stable base for the airborne figure above. D’Ylen’s red signature in the upper right operates as a smaller graphic accent, neatly answering the red details distributed through the skier’s clothing and equipment.

Context and significance

Posters of this period had to communicate swiftly in streets, cafés and other busy public settings. D’Ylen’s solution is built around instant contrasts: bright against dark, diagonal motion against horizontal lettering, exuberant character against disciplined design. The limited palette is economical but far from austere; saturated yellow and red create the initial impact, while green, white and deep blue introduce enough variation to reward closer attention.

Balsam, Apéritif au Quinquina is especially engaging because its sales message depends less on explanation than on personality. Sport, speed and conviviality are compressed into a single improbable but memorable gesture: a skier confidently managing bottle, glass and motion at once. The result preserves the direct appeal of commercial art while revealing the careful compositional intelligence behind its apparent spontaneity.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
