van-munster-s-vintage-bitters-advertising-poster-by-albert-klingner-1900
Van Munster’s Vintage Bitters Advertising Poster by Albert Klingner, 1900

Albert Klingner’s van Munster’s. Holländischer Magenbitter, dating from around 1900, turns an advertisement for Dutch stomach bitters into a piece of startling visual theatre. A wide-eyed face fills the vertical composition, its open mouth and emphatic expression framed by two brilliant red hands. Set against a nearly black ground, the pale features appear to leap forward, while the limited palette of red, beige, grey and deep shadow gives the poster an immediacy that could register at a glance.

The design belongs to a period in which European commercial posters were becoming increasingly bold, concise and pictorial. Lithographic colour printing allowed advertisers to combine memorable illustration with prominent lettering, establishing a recognisable identity amid the competing notices of the street and shopfront. Bitters occupied a particularly interesting place in this culture: herbal liqueurs were promoted not only for their flavour but also through the language of digestion and medicinal benefit. Klingner’s exaggerated figure converts those associations into a direct, almost comic bodily response.

A closer look

The poster is organised around a strong central axis. The face sits squarely in the middle, enlarged to such a degree that there is little room for setting or narrative. Large eyes, raised brows and an open mouth form a mask-like expression of shock or intensity. Subtle highlights across the forehead and cheeks lend the pale skin a degree of volume, but the treatment remains deliberately graphic rather than naturalistic.

On either side, the hands curve inwards towards the head. Their saturated vermilion is echoed in the reddish accents around the eyes, tying the figure together through colour while intensifying its theatrical character. Dark shadows around the fingers suggest depth, yet the poster largely avoids conventional pictorial space: figure, lettering and background are compressed into a single emphatic surface. The contrast is carefully controlled, with warm beige areas mediating between the scarlet details and the dark field.

Below the face, the wording supplies a firm visual base. The name “van Munster’s” appears prominently in a bold serif style, with the product description beneath it. Rather than functioning as a detached caption, the typography is incorporated into the composition: the compressed figure commands attention first, then directs the eye downwards to the brand. Klingner’s name at the upper left introduces a small counterweight to the heavier lettering below.

Context and significance

At the turn of the twentieth century, effective poster design depended upon instant recognition. Klingner’s solution dispenses with bottles, ingredients and elaborate scenery in favour of an unforgettable human expression. The result demonstrates how commercial graphics could borrow the economy of caricature—enlarged features, simplified forms and a single decisive gesture—without sacrificing the clarity of the advertisement.

What remains especially engaging is the tension between the poster’s practical purpose and its visual strangeness. The face is humorous, alarming and oddly magnetic at once; the hands might suggest astonishment, urgency or the intensity of a physical sensation, without resolving into a fixed narrative. That ambiguity, contained within an exceptionally disciplined arrangement of colour and type, gives Klingner’s advertisement a presence extending well beyond its original promotional message.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
