schick-s-vintage-aperitif-poster-1925
Schick’s Vintage Apéritif Poster, 1925

Schick’s, l’Apéritif Inédit, created by an anonymous designer in 1925, turns the promise of a French apéritif into a brisk piece of visual theatre. At its centre, a smiling, short-haired woman raises a cocktail glass while pointing directly outwards, her gesture making the advertisement unusually immediate. Saturated red and yellow shapes flare behind her, while the emphatic name “SCHICK’S” anchors the lower section in large yellow capitals against black.

The poster belongs to an interwar commercial culture in which packaging, lettering and public advertising were becoming central to a product’s identity. Rather than describing ingredients or origins, the design sells Schick’s through attitude: sociability, novelty and urbane amusement. Its subtitle, “COCKTAIL L’APÉRITIF INÉDIT”, presents the drink as something new and distinctive. The anonymous authorship is characteristic of much commercial graphic work, where designers often remained secondary to the brand whose name occupied the most commanding position.

A closer look

The woman’s pose controls the composition. One hand holds the stemmed glass lightly aloft; the other extends towards the spectator, collapsing the distance between advertisement and passer-by. Her broad smile, direct gaze and polished features lend the scene the character of a performance. A striped headband accentuates the curve of her dark hair, while the pale, finely articulated ruffled collar forms a crisp ornamental contrast with the strong planes of colour around it. Even the small highlight on the glass has a practical graphic purpose, ensuring that the advertised drink remains legible within an already energetic design.

Behind the figure, red fields appear broken into irregular, almost torn-edged forms, interrupted by flashes of yellow and deep shadow. These fragments do not establish a conventional setting; instead, they create visual momentum and keep the eye moving between face, gesture, glass and lettering. The palette is economical but forceful. Warm red supplies intensity, yellow brings sharp illumination, and black gives the design enough weight to prevent its brighter colours from dispersing.

The typography establishes a second focal point beneath the figure. “SCHICK’S” is broad, compact and instantly readable, its scale turning the brand name into part of the illustration rather than a separate caption. The smaller line below preserves a clear hierarchy: first the memorable name, then the explanation of the product. This careful ordering reveals how little information a street poster needed when colour, personality and lettering worked together effectively.

Context and significance

By 1925, the poster had become one of the most visible forms of modern commercial art. In cafés, on hoardings and throughout busy urban spaces, beverage advertisements competed for attention through simplified silhouettes, concentrated palettes and typography designed to register at a glance. Schick’s follows that logic closely, yet its fragmented backdrop and outward-pointing figure give it a particularly animated rhythm. The drink is associated not with a still life or a formal serving ritual, but with a lively human presence.

Its appeal lies in this concise fusion of portrait, performance and brand identity. The woman’s theatrical costume details reward closer attention, but the larger message remains readable immediately: a glass, a gesture and a name, orchestrated with the confidence of interwar graphic design.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
