lox-toni-vintage-aperitif-poster-by-georges-meunier-1895
Lox Toni Vintage Aperitif Poster by Georges Meunier, 1895

Georges Meunier’s Lox. Toni-Apéritif par Excellence, first issued in 1895, turns the enjoyment of an aperitif into a spirited outdoor performance. At the centre, a woman in a brilliant red dress leans back to drink, while her moustachioed companion sits beside her with his own glass raised. Their broad gestures, animated expressions and close cropping give the scene the immediacy of a fleeting social encounter. Against soft green foliage and warm brown surroundings, the scarlet dress acts as the poster’s commanding visual signal.

Meunier was a French illustrator active during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when the advertising poster became a conspicuous feature of urban visual culture. Fin-de-siècle lithography offered artists and advertisers a language suited to the street: strong colour, simplified silhouettes and lettering legible at a glance. Rather than presenting Lox as an isolated bottle, Meunier associates it with sociability, leisure and modern recreation. The result belongs to a period in which commercial graphics could be both persuasively direct and richly decorative.

A closer look

The two foreground figures form a lively asymmetrical pairing. On the left, the woman’s body follows a sweeping backward diagonal as she lifts the glass to her lips. Her tousled hair and the flowing contours of her dress soften the pose, but its scale and theatricality ensure that it dominates the composition. The seated man provides a steadier counterweight on the right. His striped shirt introduces a smaller, repeating rhythm, while his moustache, rosy cheeks and slight smile add to the poster’s convivial character.

Meunier constructs depth economically. The principal figures are defined by firm contours and relatively clear passages of colour; behind them, foliage and passing cyclists are treated more loosely. Those bicycles are easy to overlook, yet they are significant to the scene’s energy. Their wheels and abbreviated forms suggest movement beyond the table, placing this moment of refreshment within a wider world of outdoor leisure. The contrast between the stationary drinkers and the cyclists prevents the composition from becoming merely posed.

At the lower edge, the advertised bottle stands prominently on the table, its label repeating the Lox name. Typography then takes over the commercial work of the design. The short brand name appears emphatically at the top, while the lower inscription announces “Toni-Apéritif par Excellence”. Further wording includes “KINA-LOXA, COCA, KOLA” and the Paris dépôt address at 87 Avenue d’Italie. These blocks of text anchor the exuberant figure scene, creating a clear progression from name, to pleasurable association, to identifying information.

Context and significance

French posters of the 1890s often sold more than the object named in their lettering. They offered a mood, a social type or a recognisable form of modern pleasure. Here, consumption is presented as a shared and public activity rather than a formal still life. The bright palette, expressive poses and recreational background make the message instantly understandable, even before the smaller wording is read.

What distinguishes Meunier’s design is the balance between pictorial incident and graphic clarity. Red, green, orange, cream and brown create a warm, vigorous harmony, while the bottle and lettering remain unmistakable amid the movement. Lox. Toni-Apéritif par Excellence preserves the persuasive energy of late nineteenth-century advertising at the moment when the poster was becoming one of the most visible and inventive forms of popular art.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
