fresh-and-cold-vintage-lager-beer-poster-1877
Fresh and Cold Vintage Lager Beer Poster, 1877

Fresh and Cold—Lager Beer Direct from the North Pole, created by A. Hoen & Co. in 1877, turns a simple promise of refreshment into an exuberant Arctic joke. Two polar bears occupy the centre of the scene: one sits atop a wooden barrel marked ‘LAGER BEER’, raising a foaming mug as though proposing a toast. Behind them, an icy mountain landscape gives extravagant visual form to the advertisement’s claim, while the words ‘FRESH AND COLD’ blaze across the upper section in emphatic red lettering.

This American chromolithograph belongs to a period in which colour printing was transforming commercial imagery. A. Hoen & Co., a Baltimore printing firm known for lively advertising work, combines an immediately legible message with novelty, humour and saturated colour. As breweries competed for attention in the growing consumer marketplace of the late nineteenth century, such images did more than identify a product: they created memorable associations around it. Here, coldness is not merely stated but carried to comic extremes, with lager apparently arriving directly from a realm of ice and bears.

A closer look

The design is vertically organised, with its principal elements stacked for maximum clarity. Bold typography commands the top, the bears animate the middle, and the labelled barrel anchors the lower centre. This structure allows the eye to grasp the sales message almost instantly, yet the surrounding incident rewards closer inspection. The seated bear’s mug catches small highlights, while the barrel functions simultaneously as packaging, pedestal and caption. Beside the animals, a basket of bottles extends the suggestion of plentiful drink and conviviality.

Warm reds and oranges give the lettering unusual force against a softer mixture of pale blue ice, beige-white fur and brown wood. That contrast is central to the poster’s appeal: the Arctic setting may promise chill, but the palette remains cheerful rather than forbidding. Crisp contours separate the bears from the landscape, while modelling in their fur and the shadows beneath them lend a degree of volume to otherwise strongly graphic forms. The distant mountains are quieter and more muted, allowing the foreground figures to retain their theatrical prominence.

Small details amplify the absurdity. Indistinct figures at the upper left appear to observe the spectacle, introducing a human audience within the scene. Light seems to radiate behind the headline, further brightening words that already dominate through their scale and colour. The bears, meanwhile, are neither threatening nor naturalistically wild: their upright poses and sociable behaviour turn them into comic salesmen, making the advertisement’s exaggerated premise understandable before every word has been read.

Context and significance

Chromolithography enabled nineteenth-century commercial printers to produce richly coloured images with a graphic presence well suited to public advertising. In this example, colour is not decorative embellishment alone; it establishes hierarchy, separates foreground from distance and helps convert an everyday beverage into a compact visual story. The lettering names the desired qualities, the icy setting literalises them, and the drinking bears supply the memorable punchline.

The result captures a particularly energetic strain of late Victorian advertising, in which persuasion depended upon amusement as much as information. Rather than presenting lager through manufacture, ingredients or respectable consumption, A. Hoen & Co. builds an improbable miniature world around a single sensory claim. Its combination of brash typography, anthropomorphic humour and polar fantasy makes the design both a beverage advertisement and an engaging document of nineteenth-century visual marketing.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
