fledermaus-wine-restaurant-vintage-wine-poster-by-fritz-rumpf-1910
Fledermaus Wine Restaurant Vintage Wine Poster by Fritz Rumpf, 1910

Fritz Rumpf’s Fledermaus unter den Linden 14. Vergnügungs-Weinrestaurant, dated 1910, turns a Berlin nightspot into a tightly staged scene of appetite, conversation and display. Around a white-clothed table, sharply characterised figures emerge from a deep blue-black ground: a thoughtful man leans forward with a cigarette, a woman in an extravagant hat presents a tray of fruit, and an older gentleman in a vivid red jacket watches from behind. Wine glasses, silverware and a bottle chilling in an ice bucket establish the setting, but it is the interplay of glances and gestures that gives the poster its theatrical charge.

The restaurant was associated with Unter den Linden, Berlin’s celebrated central boulevard and a prominent setting for metropolitan sociability. Rumpf, a German artist born in 1856, was working at a moment when illustrated posters had become a conspicuous part of modern urban culture. Rather than offering a strictly documentary view of the venue, he constructs an alluring social world: polished, cosmopolitan and animated by the promise of late-evening entertainment. The lower inscription advertises the establishment as the “Vornehmstes Vergnügungs Weinrestaurant” and announces “Beginn 10 Uhr” — entertainment beginning at ten o’clock.

A closer look

The composition is deliberately asymmetrical. The seated man occupies the central foreground, his pale face and shirtfront set against the enveloping darkness. His forward-leaning pose directs attention towards the table, where differently shaped glasses catch crisp points of light. At the lower left, the angled neck of the bottle rises from its ice bucket, creating a visual counterweight to the figures clustered across the middle and right of the design.

Colour supplies much of the poster’s rhythm. Red appears in concentrated bursts — in clothing, fruit and small accents — while yellow and green enliven the tray carried by the woman. These saturated notes stand out against the dark backdrop and the cool whites of the table linen, glassware and clothing. The woman’s broad hat expands her silhouette dramatically, while the delicate pattern of her blouse introduces a finer decorative register amid the poster’s bold outlines and flat areas of colour.

Small details sharpen the sense of occasion. The cigarette held by the principal male figure suggests a pause within the surrounding activity; the older man’s alert expression adds another layer of observation. Reflections along the glasses and utensils give the table a bright, almost glittering edge, while the sparse background prevents the scene from becoming cluttered. Rumpf concentrates the experience of the restaurant into a handful of telling objects and faces, making the people themselves part of the advertisement.

Context and significance

The design belongs to the flourishing poster culture of early twentieth-century Germany, when commercial artists increasingly relied on immediate silhouettes, compressed space and strong colour contrasts to command attention in the street. Here, information and atmosphere are carefully separated but mutually reinforcing. The name “Fledermaus U. d. Linden 14” occupies the upper left, while the principal promotional message runs below the scene; between them, the diners embody the refined nocturnal world promised by the words.

What remains especially engaging is the poster’s ambiguity of mood. It is lively without showing obvious commotion, and luxurious without depending on an elaborate interior. A lowered gaze, a proffered tray, the sparkle of glass and the sudden flare of red are enough to evoke a sophisticated Berlin evening poised just before the entertainment begins.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
