eliane-anisette-surfine-vintage-anisette-poster-by-leon-belloguet-1901
Eliane Anisette Surfine Vintage Anisette Poster by Léon Belloguet, 1901

Léon Belloguet’s Eliane, Anisette Surfine, dated 1901 and associated with the period 1901–10, turns a beverage advertisement into a richly staged decorative composition. A woman in a flowing golden-yellow dress occupies the centre, glass held aloft, while saturated fields of red and green form a vivid backdrop. The product name, bottle and figure are arranged as a single vertical spectacle: immediately legible from a distance, yet embellished with the colour, pattern and theatricality associated with commercial design around 1900.

Belloguet was a French artist working within an advertising culture that increasingly gave branded goods their own visual identities. Rather than treating the bottle as a purely practical object, this design surrounds anisette—the anise-flavoured drink—with an atmosphere of refinement and sociability. Its emphatic lettering, ornamental detail and carefully posed figure belong to an era in which posters and labels became conspicuous parts of everyday urban life, competing for attention through memorable characters and bold chromatic contrasts.

A closer look

The composition is anchored by the standing woman, whose elongated silhouette creates a strong central axis. Highlights across her face and dress soften the otherwise graphic treatment, while delicate folds and patterned passages give the pale yellow fabric a sense of movement. Her raised glass provides the essential narrative gesture: she is not simply an ornamental figure but an elegant intermediary between the viewer and the advertised drink.

Behind her, broad red and green circular forms compress the space and sharpen her outline. Their flatness contrasts with the gentler modelling of the figure, making her appear to project forward from the decorative ground. Warm gold, cream and earthen brown mediate between these stronger colours; small floral motifs and fine details around the hair and costume reward closer attention without weakening the poster’s immediate impact. A faint border contains the dense arrangement and gives its elements a finished, label-like precision.

Typography is integrated into this structure rather than added as an afterthought. “ELIANE” appears prominently in capitals at the upper left, balancing the figure’s height, while “ANISSETTE SURFINE” forms a substantial visual base along the lower edge. The bottle occupies the lower foreground, its label and glinting glass providing a compact repetition of the larger branding around it. In this way, name, figure and product reinforce one another: the eye moves from the commanding title to the raised drink, then down to the bottle itself.

Context and significance

Commercial artists of this period regularly borrowed the visual resources of fashionable illustration—graceful poses, decorative pattern, dramatic colour blocking and stylised lettering—to distinguish ordinary consumer products. Belloguet’s design is particularly effective because it balances abundance with clarity. Although the background is richly filled, the principal information remains unmistakable, with the golden figure held between the red field, green accents and strongly placed words.

Eliane, Anisette Surfine also illustrates how advertising could create a personality around a brand. The name “Eliane” is given the prominence of a theatrical billing, while the central woman embodies the polished social world with which the drink is associated. The result is both persuasive graphic design and an evocative survival from the decorative commercial culture of the turn of the twentieth century.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
