a-vaucheret-vintage-sparkling-wine-poster-1911
A. Vaucheret Vintage Sparkling Wine Poster, 1911

Grands vins mousseux. A. Vaucheret, Lons-le-Saunier (France), produced by Imp. F. Champenois in 1911, turns a sparkling-wine advertisement into a compact display of heraldry, ornament and emphatic lettering. Against a deep green field, the name “A. VAUCHERET” commands the centre in large red capitals, while above it a stylised lion raises a wine glass amid curling vines and bunches of grapes. The effect is at once ceremonial and playful: the lion lends the brand the dignity of an emblem, yet its celebratory gesture keeps the product itself firmly in view.

The poster belongs to the flourishing commercial culture of the late Belle Époque, when vividly coloured printed advertising gave regional producers a conspicuous public identity. Imp. F. Champenois, a French printing firm active around the turn of the twentieth century, worked within a period in which the commercial poster had become an ambitious branch of graphic design rather than a merely functional notice. Here, the wines of A. Vaucheret are linked unmistakably to Lons-le-Saunier in eastern France. The proud declaration “Maison fondée en 1870” also turns longevity into part of the sales message, presenting the house as established and dependable even as the poster adopts the bold visual language of modern advertising.

A closer look

The design is organised as a descending sequence of signals. “GRANDS VINS MOUSSEUX” establishes the product category near the top, followed by the lion-and-vine device and then the much larger proprietor’s name. Smaller lettering below identifies “LONS-LE-SAUNIER (FRANCE)”, grounding the decorative display in a precise place. Differences in scale do most of the work: even at a distance, the viewer would first register the firm, then the sparkling wine, and finally the geographical and historical details.

Red and green provide the poster’s principal contrast. The rich green ground allows the red lettering and fine border accents to stand forward with unusual force, while pale areas prevent the composition from becoming overly dense. Thin rules around sections of text introduce order, balancing the more organic grape leaves and fruit. Those vines rise vertically along the design and gather around the lion, softening the rectangular structure of the typography without obscuring it.

The lion itself rewards closer attention. Broad contours and restrained internal detail make it legible as a graphic sign rather than a naturalistic animal study. Its raised glass creates a small but decisive gesture at the top of the composition, effectively staging a toast above the brand name. Nearby, a circular emblem enriched with further vine motifs adds another layer of identity. Flat passages of colour, clean edges and subtle tonal variation within the foliage give the poster both immediate clarity and decorative richness.

Context and significance

Wine advertising of this period often had to communicate several qualities simultaneously: pleasure, provenance, tradition and commercial confidence. This design achieves that synthesis through visual hierarchy rather than narrative. Grapes identify the product’s origin, the glass suggests convivial consumption, the lion supplies distinction, and the foundation date asserts continuity. Lons-le-Saunier is not treated as incidental information; its name forms part of the producer’s public identity and connects the advertised wine to a particular French locality.

What remains especially compelling is the poster’s economy. A limited palette, a handful of motifs and carefully graded lettering produce an identity that is readable, memorable and richly ornamental. It is a telling example of early twentieth-century beverage advertising, poised between decorative craftsmanship and the increasingly disciplined language of modern branding.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
