a-landre-vintage-berliner-weisse-beer-poster-by-edmund-edel-1909
A. Landré Vintage Berliner Weisse Beer Poster by Edmund Edel, 1909

Edmund Edel’s 1909 poster Echt Berliner Weißbier Weißbierbrauerei A. Landré turns a sociable encounter over beer into a piece of brisk, theatrical advertising. Two seated gentlemen engage with a formally dressed waiter, their animated gestures gathered around an outsized glass of glowing yellow Weißbier. Against the muted blue ground, dark evening clothes and emphatic black contours give the scene an almost stage-like clarity, while the minimal setting keeps attention fixed on the drink, the figures and the brewery’s name.

Created for A. Landré’s Berlin brewery, the poster belongs to a period when commercial art was becoming an increasingly assertive part of the modern city. Designers had to communicate quickly amid busy streets and competing notices; broad areas of colour, simplified silhouettes and memorable lettering answered that need. Edel’s design does more than announce a beverage. It associates Berliner Weißbier with urban sociability, attentive service and fashionable company, expressing its message through character and comic immediacy rather than extensive explanatory text.

A closer look

The principal glass occupies the central foreground, its warm yellow contents sharply distinguished from the black and brown clothing around it. Small highlights and areas of shadow give the vessel a reflective presence, while the suggestion of condensation adds a note of cool refreshment. Its exaggerated prominence establishes the poster’s visual hierarchy at once: conversation may animate the scene, but the beer remains its unmistakable centre.

On the left, a dark-haired gentleman in a tuxedo gestures towards the waiter with an open, convivial expression. Details such as the collar, buttons and pale shirt front articulate his clothing without compromising the design’s broad graphic structure. The waiter answers this energy from the right, his raised arm and welcoming smile creating a strong directional movement across the composition. The figures overlap closely, producing a compact social tableau rather than a spacious interior; very little is allowed to distract from their exchange.

Typography anchors the lower part of the poster. “Echt Berliner Weißbier” appears in a bold decorative hand, with curling flourishes that contrast with the clean, flattened forms above. Beneath it, “Weißbierbrauerei A. Landré, Berlin C. 2” supplies the brewery and address in a more informational register. A circular emblem near the upper left, apparently incorporating a goblet motif, echoes the central drink on a smaller scale. Around the whole design, a black border concentrates the saturated yellow, blue, white and brown into a neatly contained field.

Context and significance

Edel’s poster reflects the expanding role of advertising in German visual culture before the First World War. Posters were not merely notices but carefully organised public images, designed to be read at a glance and remembered afterwards. Here, the reduction of depth and texture is especially effective: flat colour establishes instant recognition, while facial expressions and gestures give the commercial message a human rhythm. The result balances illustration and branding without allowing either to overwhelm the other.

The phrase “Echt Berliner” places locality at the heart of the appeal. Rather than presenting the beer as an isolated commodity, Edel situates it within a recognisably metropolitan culture of hospitality and public sociability. The lively exchange around the table, the elegant dress and the commanding glass together make the poster a compact record of how an early twentieth-century Berlin brewery wished to be seen: modern, convivial and unmistakably of the city.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
