muller-extra-vintage-sparkling-wine-poster-by-julius-klinger-1912
Müller Extra Vintage Sparkling Wine Poster by Julius Klinger, 1912

Julius Klinger’s Müller Extra, created in 1912, turns the pleasure of a drink into a compact visual joke. On the left, a tall, curving glass holds a brilliant yellow beverage; on the right, a bald, smiling head leans towards it in profile. Klinger gives both motifs the clarity of signs rather than fully modelled objects, setting their crisp contours and orange accents against a warm beige ground. Below, the name “MÜLLER EXTRA” anchors the composition in emphatic black lettering.

The poster belongs to a period in which commercial graphics were becoming an increasingly conspicuous part of European urban life. Klinger, an Austrian illustrator and designer, was among the artists who recognised that an advertisement had to communicate at a glance. His work frequently combined economical drawing, forceful typography and visual wit, replacing elaborate pictorial description with memorable silhouettes and sharply organised colour. Made shortly before the First World War, Müller Extra demonstrates how modern poster design could transform a brand name and a simple gesture of enjoyment into a complete graphic identity.

A closer look

The composition moves naturally from glass to face. The vessel rises at the left with a slender stem and a broad, rounded bowl, its yellow contents standing out as the most saturated area of colour. A fine straw introduces a taut diagonal within the otherwise curving design, while tiny bubbles suggest effervescence. The drink is not rendered with illusionistic detail; instead, a few controlled shapes convey transparency, brightness and liveliness with remarkable economy.

Opposite it, the man’s head is similarly compressed into essentials. His bald crown forms a smooth arc, while firmer lines pick out the eye, nose, cheek and broad smile. Orange passages warm the face without creating conventional flesh tones, allowing it to remain part portrait, part graphic emblem. The proximity of his mouth to the glass establishes the advertisement’s message immediately: product and pleasure are presented as an almost continuous exchange. The asymmetry keeps the design animated, yet the two large forms remain carefully balanced across the horizontal field.

Typography supplies the poster’s visual foundation. “MÜLLER” carries the greatest weight, with “EXTRA” completing the brand statement beside or beneath it. A smaller line of information runs through the lower section, contrasting with the scale and blunt authority of the principal lettering. Small star-like marks add a celebratory note, but the surrounding negative space remains generous. Nothing competes unnecessarily with the glass, the face or the name.

Context and significance

Klinger worked at the intersection of illustration, advertising and graphic design, fields that were changing rapidly in the early twentieth century. Posters had to contend with busy streets, shopfronts and a growing abundance of printed material; simplification was therefore not merely an aesthetic preference but an effective means of public communication. In Müller Extra, broad flat colour and oversized lettering make the design legible from a distance, while the smiling profile rewards closer attention with its comic personality.

The poster’s lasting appeal lies in that balance between discipline and play. Its palette is limited, its spatial construction deliberately flat and its message concise, yet the encounter between the expectant drinker and the sparkling yellow glass gives the design a distinct human warmth. Klinger makes consumption visible not through abundance or luxury, but through anticipation—a grin, a raised glass and a name impossible to overlook.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
