bitter-vintage-advertising-poster-1928
Bitter Vintage Advertising Poster, 1928

Bitter (1928–1929), created anonymously in 1928, turns a beverage advertisement into a compact piece of visual theatre. A monumental red glass occupies the lower centre of the composition, while a fashionably stylised woman appears to spring from its contents amid arcs and splashes of liquid. Deep blue, brilliant red and dense black establish the poster’s dramatic structure; touches of green and gold then sharpen the figure and lettering against this tightly controlled palette.

The poster belongs to the sophisticated commercial culture of the late 1920s, when advertising increasingly relied on immediate silhouettes, simplified colour and memorable visual conceits. Rather than presenting the drink through sober description, the designer gives it a personality: animated, sociable and slightly mischievous. The anonymous authorship is not unusual for commercial graphic work, in which the message often took precedence over individual artistic identity. Here, however, the assurance of the composition reveals a designer keenly attuned to the modern poster’s essential task—arresting the attention at a glance.

A closer look

The red glass forms both object and stage. Its broad bowl is modelled with curved highlights and darker contour lines, creating a suggestion of rounded volume without sacrificing the poster’s predominantly flat graphic character. Fine linear detail gathers around the base, while the upper rim erupts into stylised sprays. These liquid forms extend beyond the vessel like ribbons, carrying the eye upwards and outwards through an otherwise spare field of blue.

Above and to the right, the female figure provides the design’s main note of movement. With curly blonde hair, a green outfit and a small cocktail glass held aloft, she leans into the scene with theatrical buoyancy. Folds and highlights articulate her clothing, but the details remain subordinate to the clarity of her pose. Her body forms an active diagonal against the stable, upright glass, preventing the central arrangement from becoming static.

The word ‘BITTER’ appears at the lower right in bold golden sans-serif lettering. Its placement balances the rising figure rather than competing with her, while its warm colour mediates between the red vessel and the cool blue ground. The hierarchy is economical: first the oversized drink, then the exuberant figure, and finally the product name. Dark negative space around these elements allows each to register crisply, even at a distance.

Context and significance

Commercial posters of the interwar period frequently compressed their message into a small number of emphatic forms, responding to urban settings in which images needed to be understood quickly. Bitter exemplifies that economy while retaining an unusually playful sense of fantasy. The woman does not simply endorse the beverage; she appears almost conjured by it, transforming refreshment into spectacle. Flat colour blocking and sharp edges provide graphic force, while selective highlights lend the glass and figure just enough volume to make the illusion persuasive.

What remains especially engaging is the poster’s balance of polish and exuberance. Every component serves the advertisement, yet the improbable scale, bursting liquid and airborne pose push the design beyond straightforward product display. It is a vivid expression of late-1920s commercial imagery: concise in its message, bold in colour and alert to the persuasive power of wit.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
