another-one-vintage-drinks-advertising-poster-1887
Another One Vintage Drinks Advertising Poster, 1887

Noch eins, created in 1887 by Wagner & Co. Wilson, turns a simple request for another drink into a compact piece of visual comedy. A white-bearded man, spectacles perched on his nose, raises a foaming beer mug while gesturing towards a poster behind him. There, a goat sits improbably at a table with drinks, its red tongue protruding. The portrait-format composition is crowded but legible, held together by warm orange, russet red, beige and brown, and by the genial directness of the man’s smile.

The work belongs to the expanding world of late nineteenth-century commercial graphics, when lithography—and particularly the development of colour lithography—allowed vivid illustrated designs to circulate on a broad scale. Such posters combined promotional immediacy with the detailed modelling and anecdotal humour familiar from popular illustration. Here, the German title, which may be understood as “another one”, provides the punchline: the beer mug, the man’s expectant expression and the comic animal vignette all reinforce the call for one more drink. The imprint at lower right, “WILSON, WAGNER & CO-LITH-CHICAGO”, anchors the design in American print culture while preserving its German-language appeal.

A closer look

The principal figure occupies the left and central foreground, leaning into the composition with an informality that makes him feel close to the spectator. His dark cap and clothing form the deepest tonal areas, setting off the pale beard and face. Fine lines articulate the curling facial hair, glasses and folds of his apron, while softer shading gives volume to his cheeks and hands. The mug is treated as more than a prop: highlights catch its surface, the beer glows in warm amber tones, and a small shadow beneath it gives the vessel a persuasive weight upon or just above the wooden table.

Above and behind him, the goat poster creates a picture within the picture. Its more muted colouring distinguishes it from the saturated foreground, yet the animal’s pale head and bright tongue immediately attract attention. The goat’s curious posture echoes the man’s broad humour, making the background notice feel like a second character rather than mere decoration. Because it sits slightly higher and to the right, it also balances the visual mass of the figure without turning the composition into a rigid symmetry.

At the bottom, the emphatic capitals of “NOCH EINS” function both as title and advertising refrain. Their weight provides a firm graphic base for the animated scene above. Lighter beige margins and a softly indicated background keep attention on the man, mug and comic poster, while the tabletop introduces subtle grain and a grounded horizontal line. The result is a carefully managed hierarchy: face first, then drink, then goat, and finally the printed words that make sense of the joke.

Context and significance

By the 1880s, illustrated commercial printing had become an increasingly visible part of urban life. Posters needed to communicate rapidly, often relying on recognisable characters, broad gestures, strong lettering and concentrated colour. Noch eins demonstrates that economy particularly well. Its message requires no elaborate narrative; instead, expression, gesture and typography work together with almost theatrical efficiency.

Yet the design also rewards attention beyond its immediate promotional purpose. The nested poster, finely described beard and carefully highlighted beer reveal the craftsmanship behind an apparently straightforward joke. Its lasting interest lies in this meeting of commercial clarity and playful invention: an amiable drinking scene whose warmth, visual wit and late nineteenth-century graphic character remain instantly readable.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
